It is quite ironic, however, that the minnows only got that close to South America’s Champions league thanks to the goals from a striker whose physique did (and still does) look out of place in professional football.

“Football is a democratic sport and you have all kinds of players around, including the ones who are above the ideal weight. When Ronaldo came back to Brazil a few years ago he managed to fit because of his technique. Everybody who tries to lose weight and enjoys eating knows how difficult it is. I am trying hard to get in shape because my career will only benefit from that,” says Walter.

After all, it’s easy to accuse the striker of lacking willpower and professionally. Harder to understand is that Walter found another way to cope with grief and above all, the change of pace football brought to his life. Despite the amazing coastline and premium tourist spots, Recife couldn’t be a better example of the disparities concerning Brazil. It is one of the poorest and most violent cities in Brazil, and its outskirts are no land for old men. At 6 years old, Walter saw one of his brothers fatally gunned down in a gang fight.

Growing up in Recife, Nhan Dinh he would talk his way onto his boyhood team Sport Recife’s ground by convincing adults to pretend he was related to them. Privation would soon be replaced by the comforts of the life of a professional athlete when Walter finally started making a living with football.

“Imagine a kid who didn’t have enough to eat when he was growing up and all of a sudden he can chew as much as he wants. That’s Walter,” explains Robson Gomes, Goias’ fitness trainer. And he does love chewing: Internacional teammates remember him leaving training and immediately hitting the nearby burger and hot dog stands around the ground.

Between the end of the Brazilian season in early December and his unveiling by Fluminense a month later, Walter put on 24 pounds. The interesting point, though, is that even without topping the scoring charts of the last Brasileiro, he still outscored Fred and Jo, the strikers Big Phil has put his faith on since taking over the Selecao.

Khác với cặp đấu Man  City – Barcelona, không hề có cuộc khẩu chiến nào nổ ra ở trận Arsenal-Bayern. Trước chuyến làm khách sân Emirates, HLV Pep Guardiola còn lên tiếng bênh vực người đồng nghiệp đáng kính Arsene Wenger bên phía đội bóng Bắc London.

Trong suốt những ngày qua, HLV Wenger và Jose Mourinho đã bị lôi kéo vào một cuộc tranh cãi gay gắt. Một kẻ mạnh mồm như Người đặc biệt vốn được xem là bậc thầy tâm lý chiến đã đổ cho Wenger là “kẻ thất bại” bởi suốt 9 năm qua Arsenal đã trắng danh hiệu trên mọi đấu trường. “Trong cuộc sống, không phải lúc nào chúng ta cũng nói đến danh hiệu. Ở thời điểm này bạn thắng, nhưng đôi khi cũng sẽ là những thất bại. Nên những chiếc cúp không phải là thước đo duy nhất cho thành công”, Pep nói trong cuộc họp báo trước chuyến làm khách Arsenal.

“Tôi tôn trọng Arsene Wenger. Ông ấy tôn thờ thứ bóng đá đẹp, các cầu thủ chơi đẹp và lối chơi vị nghệ thuật”, chiến lược gia sở hữu tới 13 danh hiệu lớn trong 6 năm sự nghiệp cầm quân không giấu sự ngưỡng mộ dành cho đồng nghiệp 64 tuổi bên phía Arsenal.

Nhận định về cuộc đại chiến sắp tới, Pep cũng cảnh báo các học trò rằng Arsenal hoàn toàn có thể đánh bại Bayern mặc dù đội bóng của ông được đánh giá “cửa trên”. Pep cũng không hề che giấu chiến thuật của Bayern trong 90 phút Tip free sắp tới: “Bayern bằng mọi giá phải chiếm ưu thế về quyền kiểm soát bóng.   Trusted by his manager to provide an experienced head at the back in place of Joleon Lescott but started nervously, giving away possession out of defence. Never looked fully comfortable despite some brave heading and was foolish in bringing down Messi, picking up deserved red card in the process.
